'Warringtonians' respond to Met Office Weather Warning

25/2/2016

This week the Met Office has issued Warrington with a weather warning of icy blasts (not the things that cost £10 at the cimena and gives you brain freeze) and temperatures as low as minus 2 degrees. Most people would simply take note and wrap up accordingly. Not us Warringtonians. Here's some of the responses to the warning.

"ICY BLAST ?? are you for real WBC .... stop wasting peoples time sending out these stupid warnings.... I bet the people of colder countries gain much amusement reading such scaremongering warnings !!! 2c is not worth worrying about. Try again when we have a constant -10c for a week then we may take you seriously...."

"A level three alert is triggered when average temperatures have dropped to 2C° or less.

another reason to vote for a Brexit."

And our favourite:

"It's called winter"

Full points for emotive language and humour guys.

Evans House is currently in discussions with an exit strategy game company called 'Lockdown' to open up a 'Crystal Maze' type experience at Evans House. Unfortunately Lockdown's lawyers would not agree to provide Richard O'Brien (the hair free dude from the Crystal Maze), but negotiations are ongoing. Watch this space...

St Peters Way not on fire!

21/2/2016

Letter to the Warrington Guardian this morning after the news about the fire on St Peters Way...

Dear Sirs,

Was having a lazy morning but when I heard about a fire on St Peters Way, I jumped in the car and 'legged it' to see if our building was on fire as the last fire on St Peter's Way caused a fair amount of damage. Upon arrival we found that a) we were not on fire; b) the fire was three roads away on Haydock Street and c) my toast had gone cold. I request compensation from Warrington Guardian for inaccurate journalism. Please send one slice of brown toast, buttered, to Evans House, Norman Street, Warrington.

Kind regards

David Evans

Who said stairs were bad?

Quite often you'll see children running up and down the 16 flights of stairs in Evans House with their parents wearily huffing and puffing along behind them; cursing why there aren't any lifts (there are.. two actually). For all the stair haters out there, we found some interesting 'stair facts' that should make you reconsider:
  • Stair climbing is officially classed as a ‘vigorous exercise’ and burns more calories per minute than jogging.
  • You burn about 0.17 calories for every step you climb, so you burn roughly a calorie and a half for every 10 upward steps. 4. You also burn calories going down. Every stair descended burns about 0.05 calories, so you burn 1 calorie for every 20 steps down.
  • For buildings with five floors or less, it’s nearly always quicker to take the stairs. Studies show office workers save up to 15 minutes a day by taking the stairs.
  • As well as guarding against heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some cancers, stair climbing releases endorphins that produce feelings of wellbeing.
  • Just 7 minutes stair climbing a day has been estimated to more than half the risk of a heart attack over 10 years.
  • Professional skiers often climb stairs to keep competition-fit. Many models do the same to keep their legs toned for the catwalk.
  • The heavier you are, the more calories you burn. You also burn more calories in high heels (careful lads).
